There are two ways to build with AI right now — and most developers are using only one of them.

There are two ways to build with AI right now — and most developers are using only one of them.

Vibe coding (tools like Lovable) means describing what you want and letting the AI decide everything else. It's fast, magical, and genuinely impressive for prototypes and simple apps.

Context engineering (Claude Code) means deliberately designing what the AI sees — the instructions it follows, the memory it carries, the knowledge it reasons over, and the tools it can use. It's what you reach for when the problem is complex and the output has to be right.

In the video above, I build a media portal live in Lovable and a full tax return application in Claude Code. Same AI era. Completely different results.

The Four Pillars of Context Engineering

When you engineer the context, you're filling the model's context window with four things:

1. Instructions — rules and conventions via CLAUDE.md, read every session

2. Memory — decisions that persist across sessions so the model never loses the thread

3. Knowledge — domain facts you inject directly, not training data you hope is current

4. Tools — file system, tests, APIs that feed results back into the window so the model can self-correct

Which One to Use

- Simple UI, prototype, deadline tomorrow → vibe coding

- Complex logic, multi-session, production → context engineering

The mistake is defaulting to one for everything. Match the approach to the problem.
